Neighborhood and curbside charging
Curbside EV spaces are useful when they align with where you live or are visiting, but the surrounding residential-permit, street-cleaning and active-charging rules still apply.
Bay Bridge or Golden Gate departure
If the next leg is across a bridge, search on the correct side of the city. A charger that leaves you pointed toward the bridge can be more valuable than a nominally faster station across town.
How to avoid a frustrating San Francisco charging stop
- Choose the parking plan first. If you already need a garage, search around that destination and see whether charging can happen while the car is parked.
- Do not assume a curbside charging stall overrides other signed restrictions. Read the signs at the space and confirm any time limit.
- If you are road-tripping north or south, leave the densest parts of the city with enough range to choose a charger along US-101 or I-280 rather than charging under time pressure downtown.
- Use bridge traffic and garage access as part of the ETA. Straight-line distance is especially misleading in a dense, one-way street network.

Use Downtown/SoMa, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Mission or the SFO area to avoid an unnecessary cross-town trip.
