Where San Diego trips diverge
The best stop depends heavily on whether the trip is coastal, inland or destination-based.
I-5 coastal travel
For trips toward La Jolla, Carlsbad, Orange County or Los Angeles, choose a charger with easy north-south access and avoid a detour deep into a beach neighborhood unless that is your destination.
I-8 and I-15 departures
Eastbound and inland trips can become much less charger-dense than central San Diego.
Plan the charge around the next 50 miles
- If the next leg leaves the metro, start by checking the next dependable charger after San Diego. Work backward to decide how much energy you actually need before departure.
- Use destination charging for beaches, hotels, shopping and attractions only when the car will sit long enough to gain meaningful range.
- For I-8 desert travel, leave extra battery margin for heat, elevation changes and limited fallback options.
- If you are continuing north on I-5, compare chargers in North County as well as central San Diego; the better route-aligned stop may be farther north.
